ONTARIO TO ALBERTA

To transfer from Ontario's ODSP to an Alberta disability program, you must first establish residency in Alberta and obtain an Alberta health care number. Since July 1, 2026, Alberta's new disability support system is the Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP), which is replacing AISH. ADAP is designed to help people with disabilities earn employment income, while AISH was for those with a permanent, severe disability unable to work. If you were previously on AISH, you would have transitioned to ADAP, or if you're a new applicant, you must apply for ADAP. 

Steps to Transition to ADAP from ODSP:

• Relocate to Alberta: You need to establish residency in Alberta. 

• Obtain Alberta Health Care: Apply for and obtain an Alberta health care number, as you'll need this for local benefits. 

• Apply for ADAP: You will need to complete the necessary applications to receive benefits in Alberta. Based on recent government announcements, the primary program will be ADAP, which focuses on supporting individuals who are able to work and earn income, in addition to providing financial and medical support. 

Understanding the ADAP Program:

• Purpose: 

ADAP is designed to help Albertans with disabilities who have the ability to work to earn employment income, while still receiving necessary financial and medical supports.

How the DAU Works

• Application: 
You submit a Disability Determination Package, which includes forms completed by your healthcare professional. 

• Adjudication:

• Decision: 
They provide written notice of their decision and will assign a medical review date if your condition has the potential to improve.
