Braking news! A new patent from Stellantis is taking a fresh look at one of the oldest technologies in the automotive empire, possibly bringing it into the modern era. The new idea proposes moving back to drum brakes, but with a twist: adding a magnet to the system to capture the particles released each time you brake. It might sound like a strange thing for the automaker to worry about, but as vehicles become more and more efficient, we're learning that other auto emissions, including brake particles, can have severe health impacts.
When you apply the brakes in a vehicle, it turns motion into heat and you slow down. The friction between the brake pad or shoe and the rotor or drum is how that energy gets converted, but the brakes don't heat up in isolation. Both pad and friction surfaces release particles each time you stop. That's where brake dust comes from on your wheels and why pads and rotors wear out.
Brake Particles Are Really Bad For You
It turns out those particles are bad for you. Scientists in the UK have found that modern brake dust is more toxic than diesel emissions. Governments are taking notice. The latest emissions standards in Europe, Euro 7, force automakers to account for brake particulate emissions. For a few years, Chevrolet couldn't sell most V8 models of the Camaro in California and Washington because its brakes didn't meet rules there.
To help capture the particles, Stellantis engineers are proposing making the brakes magnetic. A thin magnetic foil or coating would be applied to the brakes and any magnetic particles would then stick to it.
The need to capture as many particles as possible is why the idea is to use drum brakes. With a disc brake system, the pad and rotor surfaces are mostly exposed to the air. Capturing a meaningful portion of the particles would be all but impossible. With a drum brake system, the friction surfaces are inside the drum. That makes it a lot easier to trap the particles inside.
Cars have all but eliminated drum brakes though. Discs are generally perceived as being better, mostly because of a greater ability to shed heat in automotive use. With electric cars, however, the drum brake has been making a comeback. Because regenerative braking uses electric motors to provide more and more of the braking, the heat dissipation of discs isn't important.
EVs like the Volkswagen ID.4, Fiat 500e, and even the Audi Q4 e-tron use drums at the rear. It's all they really need. They're lighter, simpler, and have less rolling resistance, all contributing to longer range.
This system wouldn't catch all brake particles. Anything nonferrous would still end up in the air. But it could reduce those emissions and, with a change in brake pad materials, it could become even more effective. The system would need to be cleaned, but wiping a magnet shouldn't be expensive and could be done with normal brake inspections. With EVs wearing down their brakes less and less, a new drum-based system could potentially last hundreds of thousands of miles before needing replacement.
